1984: The Stars Are Born

With the opening of the ice rink, the Oxford City Stars are established entering the British Hockey League Division Two. Finishing top of their division and gaining promotion, Where the remained for 2 seasons before relegation. Further league success followed. Oxford finished first again in 1990/91 & 1995/96.

In 1996/97. Problems with the ice plant forced the team away from its home, with the side competing as the Chill during the 1997/98 season.

Senior hockey subsequently returned to Oxford under the Oxford Blades name.

It proved to be a challenging period, culminating in the senior team folding during the 1999/2000 season.

The Return of Oxford City Stars

The team returned for the 2000/01 season. During the decade that followed, the team twice finished in 2nd place, until another major challenge arrived during the 2011/12 season, when the senior team folded midway through the campaign.

Rebuilding and Winning Again

Oxford rebuilt and returned in the South Division Two for 2012/13. They immediately and followed that success by finishing first again in 2013/14 and a return to Division One. Where they remained until the collapse of the EPL. The Oxford City stars opted to play Divison 2 hockey for the 2017/18 season, The team produced winning 23 of 26 games on their way to the title.

 A 3rd place finish in 2018/19 and new ownership saw the stars return to div 1 for the 2020/21 season that never happened. Where they remained fighting at the bottom of the table till they folded again at the end of the 2024/25 season.

The Rising Stars

The Oxford Rising Stars were established in 2022. Playing in Division Two South.

Over the following seasons, the Rising Stars continued to develop as a team. Results improved. Seeing the team make playoffs in each of the last 3 years. With two seasons being the only team in Oxpens Road.

With the rising stars directors needing to step away and failed attempts to bring back the City Stars, The decision was made, it was time for something new.

The Oxford Stars

For the 2026/27 season, Oxford Stars are entered in NIHL Division Two.

The History of Oxford Ice Hockey, more than four decades of memories, championships, players, volunteers and supporters.

  • British Division Two Champions: 1984/85, 1990/91 and 1995/96
  • British Division Two Playoff Champions: 1984/85
  • English National League Runners-up: 2003/04 and 2004/05
  • English National League Cup Runners-up: 2003/04
  • NIHL Division Two South Champions: 2012/13, 2013/14 and 2017/18

The objective is to build a sustainable senior club connected to the wider Oxford hockey community, giving locally developed players something clear to aspire to and giving Oxford supporters a team capable of representing their city with pride. The history is not something we leave behind. It is the foundation on which Oxford Stars is being built.
